DOH: Stop asking nurses to pay to work in hospitals

THE Department of Health (DPH) has ordered public hospitals to stop the practice of making registered nurses pay to work as trainees.

DOH Secretary Enrique Ona signed an order last August 22 terminating all nurse training programs in public hospitals for not being consistent with provisions of the law.

DOH said some hospitals promote “nurse volunteerism to justify the collection of training fees.”

News briefing: 3 girls rescued from another cybersex den in Cordova

Police raided another cybersex den in Cordova town in Cebu yesterday, more than a month after a couple was arrested there for using their children as performers for their cybersex operations.

Three minors, aged 9, 12, and 17, were rescued in yesterday’s raid by the Provincial Intelligence Branch headed by Supt. Rodolfo Albotra. The three were brought to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for counseling.

Albotra said they caught the 3 children naked and doing “lewd acts” in front of a computer-mounted camera.

The house has been placed under surveillance for 2 months on suspicion its owner was involved with an illegal online business.

News briefing: 3 fires break out in Cebu in 3 hours

Two days after a fire left an estimated 1,200 people homeless in Barangay Tejero, Cebu City, 3 fires broke out in the cities of Cebu and Mandaue yesterday. Initial estimates place the total property damage in the 3 fires at P370,000.

Several people were injured when a fire razed 7 houses and damaged 3 houses in Sitio Bramans in Barangay Mambaling at 9:16 a.m. yesterday. Two hours earlier, a fire hit Sitio Caimito in Barangay Sambag I.

Barely had the firemen placed the Mambaling fire under control, another blaze broke out in Barangay Ibabao-Estancia in Mandaue City. The fire, reported at 10:15 a.m. burned down a bunkhouse, damaged a van and an auto repair shop and killed a dog and 6 chickens. Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has ordered the re-blocking and road restoration in 3 sitios hit by fire in Barangay Tejero. Rama ordered 8 City Hall offices and 2 councilors to implement these in 3 days.

Rama also asked the fire department to conduct an inventory of all fire hydrants in the city after finding out that there was a fire hydrant 50 meters from the area hit by Saturday’s fire but fire fighters could not use it because it was inside a house. Suspect in robbery, killing of policeman in Talisay arrested

Police arrested Thursday in Tangub City in Misamis Oriental the suspect in the killing of a rookie police officer responding to a robbery alarm last March 11.

Suspect Noel Simbajon, 29, was arrested in a police checkpoint in Tangub City while he was driving a motorcycle.

Simbajon, according to a Sun.Star Cebu report, admitted he was one of the robbers chased by PO1 William Mangubat in Sitio Mananga, Talisay City but denied shooting the policeman. Simbajon said his companions, brothers Lito and Jundee Oros, were the killers. The two are still at large and being hunted by police.

Climate change to sink Cebu airport, environmentalist warns

Climate change will cause floods in coastal areas of Cebu in the coming years, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) president Jose Ma. Lorenzo Tan warned in a report by Cebu Daily News.

Tan said the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) in Lapu-Lapu City is one of 6 airports in Central Visayas “vulnerable to being submerged by rising water levels in a scenario of climate change.”
